Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting Surgery

Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) surgery commonly referred to as "bypass surgery," is a surgical procedure used to treat coronary artery disease (CAD) or severe coronary artery blockages. CAD occurs when the blood vessels (coronary arteries) that supply oxygen and nutrients to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked due to the buildup of fatty deposits (atherosclerosis). CABG surgery aims to improve blood flow to the heart muscle by bypassing these blockages.

Here's how the procedure works:

Anesthesia: CABG surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia, which means the patient is asleep and pain-free during the procedure.

Incision: The surgeon makes an incision in the chest, usually down the middle of the sternum (breastbone), to access the heart.

Harvesting Veins: In most cases, a healthy blood vessel, often taken from the leg (saphenous vein) or the chest wall (internal mammary artery), is harvested. This vessel will be used as a graft to bypass the blocked coronary artery.

Bypass Grafting: The harvested blood vessel is then surgically attached (grafted) to the coronary artery above and below the blocked or narrowed segment. This creates a new pathway for blood to flow, bypassing the blocked section.

Restarting the Heart: If necessary, the heart may be temporarily stopped while the grafts are being connected. During this time, a heart-lung machine is used to maintain oxygen-rich blood circulation throughout the body.

Completion: Once all necessary grafts are in place, and the surgeon is satisfied with the new blood flow, the heart is restarted, and the patient is gradually weaned off the heart-lung machine.

Closure: After ensuring proper heart function, the chest is closed with sutures or staples, and the incision is bandaged.

CABG surgery is performed to relieve angina (chest pain) and improve the blood supply to the heart muscle, reducing the risk of heart attacks. It can also be a life-saving procedure for individuals with severe coronary artery blockages.

Recovery from CABG surgery can take several weeks, and patients are typically advised to make significant lifestyle changes, such as adopting a heart-healthy diet, engaging in regular exercise, and quitting smoking, to reduce the risk of future heart problems.

The decision to undergo CABG surgery is typically based on a thorough evaluation by a cardiologist or cardiac surgeon, taking into consideration the patient's overall health, the extent of coronary artery disease, and the severity of symptoms.
